The Beast by J.R. Ward (The Black Dagger Brotherhood #14)

TITLE: ⟫ The Beast
AUTHOR: ⟫ J.R. Ward

SERIES: ⟫ The Black Dagger Brotherhood #14
RATING:
⟫ 5/5

BLURB: ⟫ Nothing is as it used to be for the Black Dagger Brotherhood. After avoiding war with the Shadows, alliances have shifted and lines have been drawn. The slayers of the Lessening Society are stronger than ever, preying on human weakness to acquire more money, more weapons, more power. But as the Brotherhood readies for an all-out attack on them, one of their own fights a battle within himself . . .

For Rhage, the Brother with the biggest appetites, but also the biggest heart, life was supposed to be perfect – or at the very least, perfectly enjoyable. Mary, his beloved shellan, is by his side and his King and his brothers are thriving. But Rhage can’t understand – or control – the panic and insecurity that plague him . . .

And that terrifies him – as well as distances him from his mate. After suffering mortal injury in battle, Rhage must reassess his priorities – and the answer, when it comes to him, rocks his world . . . and Mary’s. But Mary is on a journey of her own, one that will either bring them closer together or cause a split that neither will recover from . . .

REVIEW: ⟫ CWell this had me in utter bits at numerous points of the story! JR Ward really knows how to turn the screws and this book was a doozy! It would have been far too easy to leave all of the Brothers happily mated, spawning young and living their best life, but that has never been the situation in Caldwell and Rhage is no exception. It was fantastic to return to his story with Mary, and being reminded of how he loves her was so special. It was also terrifying with V’s premonitions, the plotting and mischief going on, and all of the medical drama. Like, oh my goodness, I was really holding my breath at some points. And yes, I had more than one cry.

I don’t want to spoil this (even though it’s quite old and most people will have read it by now) but suffice to say, I was held hostage by the storytelling and completely enjoyed my return to Rhage, his Mary and their dinosaur. The ending made me so happy, I was squeeing with joy and I am looking forward to reading the further adventures with everything going on. Highly recommended and as a P.S. I cannot wait to see if we get this far in the TV adaptation because I think it would be amazing to watch this on screen!

The Shadows by J.R. Ward (Black Dagger Brotherhood #13)

TITLE: ⟫ The Shadows
AUTHOR: ⟫ J.R. Ward

SERIES: ⟫ Black Dagger Brotherhood #13
RATING:
⟫ 4.5/5

BLURB: ⟫ Trez “Latimer” doesn’t really exist. And not just because the identity was created so that a Shadow could function in the underbelly of the human world. Sold by his parents to the Queen of the S’Hsibe as a child, Trez escaped the Territory and has been a pimp and an enforcer in Caldwell, NY for years- all the while on the run from a destiny of sexual servitude. He’s never had anyone he could totally rely on… except for his brother, iAm.

iAm’s sole goal has always been to keep his brother from self-destructing- and he knows he’s failed. It’s not until the Chosen Serena enters Trez’s life that the male begins to turn things around… but by then it’s too late. The pledge to mate the Queen’s daughter comes due and there is nowhere to run, nowhere to hide, and no negotiating.

Trapped between his heart and a fate he never volunteered for, Trez must decide whether to endanger himself and others- or forever leave behind the female he’s in love with. But then an unimaginable tragedy strikes and changes everything. Staring out over an emotional abyss, Trez must find a reason to go on or risk losing himself and his soul forever. And iAm, in the name of brotherly love, is faced with making the ultimate sacrifice…

REVIEW: ⟫ I didn’t expect to care so much about this story – Trez and iAm are both fascinating characters, but they weren’t fully on my radar until reading this. The culmination of years of running away and hiding, the story of Trez and iAm is so entwined that the way things played out should not have been a shock.

The background plot-points – war, the Bastards, Throe and the changes within the whole society – were also gripping and there were times when I gave a hefty sigh of frustration when the next chapter didn’t continue from where the previous chapter ended, but I should have trusted that J.R. Ward knew what they were doing. I cried so much during this story – like, sobbing into a tissue as I dashed the tears away so I could continue reading. Some of this story was so painful to read – my reactions to what Trez and Selena went through were visceral.

Layla continues to drive me insane – like, seriously, so many opportunities to at least try to unravel things, but I could also well understand just why she was holding back. I loved seeing more of the various doggen; Fritz continues to be the MVP; and the three menaces of V, Butch and Rhage were in this enough to keep me happy. I loved the further world building, learning about other societies and how they existed alongside the vampires. The ending was relatively satisfying – although I hesitate to call it a HEA – and it leads directly to “The Beast” which is Rhage and Mary who are one of my favourite couples. I’m glad I read this and will consider looking into the off-shoots that have sprung up but I still have about seven Black Dagger Brotherhood books to read first!

Romancing Mr Bridgerton by Julia Quinn (The Bridgertons Book #4)

TITLE: ⟫ Romancing Mr Bridgerton

AUTHOR: ⟫ Julia Quinn

SERIES: ⟫ The Bridgertons Book #4

RATING: ⟫ 2.5/5

BLURB: ⟫ Everyone knows that Colin Bridgerton is the most charming man in London. Penelope Featherington has secretly adored her best friend’s brother for…well, it feels like forever. After half a lifetime of watching Colin Bridgerton from afar, she thinks she knows everything about him, until she stumbles across his deepest secret…and fears she doesn’t know him at all.

Colin Bridgerton is tired of being thought nothing but an empty-headed charmer, tired of everyone’s preoccupation with the notorious gossip columnist Lady Whistledown, who can’t seem to publish an edition without mentioning him in the first paragraph. But when Colin returns to London from a trip abroad he discovers nothing in his life is quite the same – especially Penelope Featherington! The girl haunting his dreams. But when he discovers that Penelope has secrets of her own, this elusive bachelor must decide…is she his biggest threat – or his promise of a happy ending?

REVIEW: ⟫ Like many, I arrived at this book following the series on Netflix. However, Colin and Penelope’s story was the first that made me want to read the accompanying book – I adored the first two seasons and don’t get me started on Queen Charlotte – but I wanted more of Colin and Pen and decided to visit the source material.

I can well see why some of the book fans feel that Netflix has taken the essence of the characters and bounced off from there – it wasn’t impossible to imagine the characters as the actors but their actions and behaviours were so different from the series that I finally decided to divorce the two in my mind. I don’t read many heterosexual romances – MM is more to my taste – but I had hoped that the chemistry between Colin and Penelope would take over. However, in the book I was disappointed by so much. Colin’s internal dialogue about Penelope, his reasoning, his attitude – it was all a tad fratboy (or rather rakish) than I was expecting. He seemed quite shallow and superficial and I found myself wondering just what it was about him that Penelope fell in love with. I saw very little of his much vaunted kindness and indeed, more often than not I felt he was quite a petulant little boy in his behaviours and actions.

Admittedly, his declaration of love for his wife was brilliant – touching, romantic, proud – but it took what felt like far too long to get there. I think I will happily watch the series on Netflix and not read the rest of the books – I cannot imagine they will engender more affection for the characters than I already have and might instead taint my expectations/hopes.

I understand that the books have a very passionate fanbase, which I am glad for because without them I doubt the series would have been made, but it feels like the novels are not for me although obviously YMMV.
